For me, March holds a lot of Intensity. Which makes a lot of senseโPisces and Aries, two very intense zodiac signs, share space in the month of March, and collectively we (in the US) experienced the beginning effects of COVID-19 in March 2020 which left an intense mark on our nervous systems and hearts. March holds the beginning of new life being welcomed back to the Earth, and with new beginnings, there is sometimes uncertainty. Right now my life is full of uncertaintyโcareer, relationships, and the world around me. There is one thing for certain, uncertainty is consistent with new beginnings.
Navigating through uncertainty is a practice and an opportunity to practice yoga off my mat. Showing up to connect to my body, mind, and spirit, through uncertainty and intensity, is the practice.
So here are some of my practices dealing with uncertaintyโin case you find yourself in a new beginning...
1. I may not have been HERE before, but I have been here before.
โ I may be in a new situation, but I have been in uncertain times before. I have made it through uncertainty to the other side despite not knowing what would happen or where support would come from. Sometimes bringing to mind past situations and how they worked out brings me comfort.
2. Find your roots.
โ Literally get grounded. I go where I feel supported. I spend time with family, friends, or community that provides me stillness and comfort. I spend time in nature (especially as Spring comes into form) and more time at home creating a comfortable space.
3. Of course, Mediation and Breath
โ I KNOW this and sometimes thatโs the hardest thing to do so I change it up. Stillness can be hard during uncertainty so Iโll do a walking meditation, meditate with a friend, or dance. I look for ways to spice up how I connect with my body and breath.
4. โWTFโ is a totally valid emotion to have during a new beginning or uncertainty
โ I give myself permission to be confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed. I give myself permission to make mistakes and get messy.
โ When I give myself permission to have these feelings, I often find other feelings like understanding, compassion, grace, and acceptance become available as well.
5. I LAY OUT IN THE SUN.
โ This has been big for me lately. You can catch me at Sandy Creek Park on the dock by the lake when I need time to myself. There is something about the wide open space and having absolutely nothing to do but feel the warmth of the sun on my skin that really reminds me that everything will be okay without my attention for a little while. Take time for yourself. Find something that feels like doing nothing that feels good and let the world continue without you.
6. Embrace uncertainty by trying something new.
โ Go to a new restaurant, a new park, a new salon, etc. Expand to new places and see what happens and how you feel. Iโm pretty set in my routine of places I like going to eat, get coffee, and walk all in the same places, but when I try something new it is exciting and reminds me that my comfort zone is great, but there are more things available to bring me joy. It can be hard, scary, and uncomfortable to lean into uncertainty, but I think of the times when I leaned in anyways. Moving to Athens, starting yoga, doing my teacher training, becoming an instructor, a manager, an owner. Uncertainty brought me to my dreams. Yes, there are many twists and turns, but that is part of the magic.
Can I lean into something bigger than myself, provide my body the comfort it needs to feel supported, and show up over and over through discomfort? Can uncertainty become an opportunity to participate in the transformation of my reality?
Lastly, remember, you are doing great! Truly, remind yourself over and over how amazing it is that you are co-creating with yourself through uncertainty. If it was easy, we wouldnโt struggle with it and weโd all have no problem with not having the answers or solutions. It isn't, and we're all human, together.
Wishing you possibility and presence,
Lucy
